Mary,

How nice of you to stop by and comment! Thank you.

There is something about Japanese Red Maples, no doubt about it. My theory is that since leaves are typically green, other colored leaves grab our attention. That's hardly fair to the green-leafed plants, but we all know how important it is to stand out in a crowd. And let's face it. Outside, green is the predominant color. Of course we're drawn to anything that contrasts -- especially if it's attractive.

I'm amazed at the number of a varieties of Japanese Maples. There are non-red varieties, too! But my joy is to admire the red trees, even plain old Red Maples that aren't Japanese at all. Those always catch my eye, too.

Thank you again for commenting. And stop by anytime! I value your feedback.

Hi, Deb,
You have hit on some memories I have about these lovely trees. My grandparents' home in West Philly was one of my most memorable places to visit when I was young, and there was a Japanese Red Maple in their tiny front yard. I always loved the color and the shade it gave as we sat on the porch.

In our backyard, we have 2 trees, one of which is a Japanese red maple and the other a holly tree. When I see the beautiful maple every morning as I make coffee, it always gives me a sense of gratitude. I'm glad you are on this new journey, Deb. Enjoy the growth!
Best,
Mary

Look for this book on Amazon "Japanese Maples" by J.D. Vertrees. It is the quintessential reference book for Japanese Maples, their care , culture & descriptions, with more than 300 photos & detailed description of the trees characteristics.
